..and we’re here to guide you through the process as easily and painlessly as possible. Earlier today, there was a “guide” posted on several sites which more or less directed you to wipe your phone beforehand. Guess what? You don’t need to do any of that to Jailbreak and you never will!
Now for starters, there are a few pre-emptive steps to take:
Step One
Create a folder on your desktop (or wherever you’d like it to be). This will be the folder we use for our redsn0w files, etc. You can name yours anything you’d like; to keep things simple here we’re naming ours Pwnage.
Download RedSn0wfrom here or here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Next, download the latest 3.0 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.
3.0.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
3.0.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Pwnage folder. You should now have a similar looking folder with the same contents as the one pictured below:

Step Two
Now that we’ve got everything where we want it, go ahead and launch redsnw0w.exe from the Pwnage folder that you created in step one.
Step Three Once RedSn0w opens, click the Browse button
Step Four
Select the firmware ipsw that we placed in the Pwnage folder, then click Open
Step Five
Once the firmware has been verified, click the Next button to continue.
Step Six
Make sure Cydia is selected and click the Next button.
Step Seven
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF before clicking the Next button
Step Eight
redsn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. Don’t worry if you don’t nail this down with split-second precision; there is some room for error and if you completely mess up, redsn0w will simply take you back to this step for another try.
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until redsn0w detects the device.
Step Nine
Your iPhone will now reboot
Step Ten
redsn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.
Step Eleven
Once this is complete, you will be notified that redsn0w is done. Click the Finish button.
When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so), it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard. Enjoy!
We will continue to keep everyone up to date on future jailbreak methods, improvements, etc. so stick around!

[...] Dit is naar mijn mening een goede uitleg, enige nadeel is dat je geen custom firmware kan gebruiken ( je moet die op de website gebruiken, werkt perfect): mashingkeys, it's what we do. [...]

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I have been searching for 2 days to find something like this. Worked exactly like you said it would.
Great job!
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 13:33
Great tut peeps, should mention that people using vista should run redsn0w as administrator though. Kept running into problems when it got to uploading ramdisk otherwise, then redsn0w would close itself down. All sorted now though, thank you!!! B-)

I had updated 3.0 from Itunes and I followed the above process to jailbreak 3.0. Now Cydia is added to my home screen. I inserted my tmobile sim card but shows no network. Sb Plz help me with this
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 15:31
Just one question, do you still need to update to the 3.0 firmware via itunes (currently still on 2.2.1) or do you just leave that all up to redsn0w to do?
cheers.
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 19:22
hey veez,
go ahead and update to 3.0 via iTunes like any previous update before running redsn0w and jailbreaking.
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 19:27
Having a bit of trouble, I tried this process at first when on 2.2.1, 1st Gen iPod Touch, and that froze up on the “Downloading Jailbreak Data…” screen, so I restored my iPod to the Official 3.0, worked fine. Then I tried to jailbreak my iPod at 3.0 and it has once again froze on the “Downloading Jailbreak Data…” screen. *sigh*
I will fix it soon though haha. Thanks for the tutorial.

Would you say its a wise move to wait for ultrasn0w to be released before updating and jailbreaking or would it be ok to add ultrasn0w later (assuming that you are happy to use the iphone locked for the timebeing)??
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 22:16
guess im computer stupid lol….got redsnow to run but it wouldnt open the restore…it keeps sayin unable to recognize
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:26
Hey natasha,
Is your iPhone already updated to 3.0 via iTunes?
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:32
Hey veez,
I’d definitely just wait it out for ultrasn0w. We’ll post an additional guide when it hits, and the team is nearing completion with it! Just a few minor kinks to work out that appeared in a minority of the phones that they’ve been testing :)
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:34
yes it is….can it still be unlocked or no :(
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:36
Hey Mike,
Best bet is to stick to your regular 3.0 until ultrasn0w is released. At the moment, the team is having some trouble with the unlocking process of phones. When ultrasn0w is released, we’ll have a new tutorial up and running for those of us that aren’t on AT&T
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:37
Hey Sean,
The current tutorial is for the iPhone 3.0, we’ll have a tutorial up for iPod Touch users tonight!
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:38
Natasha,
This tutorial is to jailbreak the iPhone ;) if you need to unlock it (i.e. you’re using T-Mobile, etc) you’ll need to stick around for ultrasn0w which should be released soon.
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:43
ok, Thx a bunch
Posted on June 21st, 2009 at 23:54
Thanks Locke,
Will wait it out…. well worth the wait, thanks for your help.

i have downloaded all the files like it says, i dont know what im doing wrong but when i download the iphone restore file its not like it shows above, i dont get the ipsw and when i browse it doesnt find anything. can anyone help
Posted on June 22nd, 2009 at 19:27
1. you NEED to be on 3.0 before attempting the above.
2. you can update as long as you dont need to sim unlock also (wait for ultrasn0w only if you NEED to be sim unlocked)
3. if using windows 7 it will crash while uploading ramdisk. to get around this you need to right click on the app and pick properties>>go to compatibility tab>>check “run this program in compatible mode” and pick Windows XP SP3
hope answers questions and helps some people out.

So, does this work on a 3Gs?
Posted on June 25th, 2009 at 11:59
Hey Cory,
The 3Gs version isn’t quite finished yet. Currently, you could use redsn0w for: unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool, jailbreaking the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). When the 3Gs version is up, we’ll have a new tutorial out so stick around!
Posted on June 25th, 2009 at 12:05
Cool, could you link to that here when it’s up so i can bookmark this page?
Posted on June 25th, 2009 at 12:24

Keep up the good work!

I am having a problem!!!! WHen i try to look for the firmware it wont find it!!! Help…..please
Posted on June 25th, 2009 at 18:10
How long does or should the reboot step take i have been waiting for about 5 min
Posted on June 25th, 2009 at 22:01
Hey Jeana,
If you followed all of the steps correctly and waited it out, your phone should have rebooted within a few minutes. There seems to be a very small (less than .5%) amount of people having issues with redsn0w at the moment. Any feedback to give to the developers would be a great help.

Posted on June 28th, 2009 at 01:09
Glad to hear the jailbreak went smoothly for your phone! Correct me if I’m wrong, your husband’s phone is getting stuck on the ramdisk upload? Was your husbands phone already upgraded to 3.0 beforehand?
Posted on June 28th, 2009 at 01:36
this actually is easy and it works !!!
Posted on June 29th, 2009 at 10:11

Kyle, your ipod is in service mode, and you can fix the iphone very easily. Open Itunes, and choose restore while holding shift key. Select the OS (3.0…etc) and let the iphone restore itself.
Posted on June 30th, 2009 at 22:11
Hey, If I use this to jailbreak my new iPhone 3G what would I have to do to activate the phone?
I bought the phone off eBay, but it had to be traded in for a new one before shipped.
(It hasn’t arrived yet, I thought I’d ask beforehand.)
My carrier is AT&T.
Thanks :)

I’ve followed everything instructed but still failed getting my iphone 3G jailbroken. I got to step 11 just fine, but after I clicked on the Finish button, nothing happened. The phone remained to be turned off. It didn’t seem like it was rebooting. Is it supposed to be that way? Meaning, will it remain off for about 5 minutes, then reboot?
Posted on July 8th, 2009 at 17:29

how u did that , i followed the same procd i have 2g & running on vista
Posted on July 19th, 2009 at 05:31
Nothing will be erased by following the above process. If you format your ipod, then yes your data will be erased. Jailbreaking itself does not tamper with any files that are already stored on the ipod / iphone.
Posted on July 21st, 2009 at 14:20
Whenever i download the Itunes recovery software it always downloads as a zipped file and i never get that white lego block symbol, what do i need to do?
Posted on July 22nd, 2009 at 02:28
Works awesome, thanks a lot!
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 at 01:25
I have 3.0 downloaded already and I have downloaded the two files as mentioned, however I can't find the .ipsw file? what do I do?
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 at 04:22
Worked out that if you have something like winrar installed it seems to change the file from .ipsw to a zip. All you need to do is rename the file extension and it works.
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 at 04:37
I'm having a problem extracting the files… whenever I try to extract it says there is a file with the same name but I dont have another file anywhere besides the zip file… can anyone help me with this problem please!!!
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 at 14:44
is there a tutorial for jailbreaking an ipod touch (Firmware 2.2.1)? i cant find out how to jailbreak it…
Posted on July 23rd, 2009 at 15:11
Hey, I've gone step by step, downloaded the files from the specified sources, and basically done exactly what was stated and everytime I try to JB my 3G redsn0w “encounters an error and has to be closed.” I've tried re downloading from different mirrors and such and gone through this process 5 times now. Any suggestions?
Posted on July 24th, 2009 at 07:02
Thanks you!!– much clearer than anything else I found online, and much appreciated.
For those (like me) who also want to unlock:
redsn0w provides unlocking functionality in addition to jailbreaking functionality for the iPhone 2g. To also unlock, the above steps work fine, except for the following changes.
1. When downloading redsn0w and the firmware at the start, also download the baseband bootloaders v3.9 and v4.6. One site compiling links is http://www.poorlad.com/iCommunity/, which just links to google searches for the relevant bootloader filenames.
2. (Obviously) also check 'unlock' in Step Six above.
3. Put the new SIM card in the phone before connecting it to your computer in Step Seven above.
Thanks again.

Posted on August 8th, 2009 at 19:21
The Firmware is above on this page. Choice witch Iphone model you have.
And remember you have to rename the zip file into .ipsw read it all above.
When i load the firware redsnow app says the firmware is ok so i can continue.
I dare don't do it. i don;t know if all my apps are gone or will it only upgrade the firmware?
Posted on August 9th, 2009 at 05:25
jailbreaking does not alter anything that is already on your phone in any way. please read the above comments, thanks!
Posted on August 10th, 2009 at 14:31
Only thing that needs to be added is for mainly for intermediate computer users. After downloading the .ZIP files, you need to change your folder options if you havn't already to show file extensions. Once you see the extensions, since you don't see an .ipsw file, you need to change the .ZIP folder to .IPSW………you will then be ableto see it when you browse. EIther way, GREAT jailbreak. Worked wonderfully!!
Posted on August 12th, 2009 at 21:44
Took a few to figure out how to find the ipsw files…I had to rename the .zip to .ipsw…..then it worked just like a glove…I did my 3G and my sons….Great job!!! Waiting on the unlocking now that I am jailbroke…..Kudos!!
Posted on August 17th, 2009 at 16:55
Awesome to hear, Misty! Enjoy your iPhone freedom :)

hey when i download the redsnow all i ever get is limewire .. the file does open and when i try and extract the only thing that shows up is a message from limewire sending me a message in regards if i should overide the red snow i have downloaded
Posted on August 20th, 2009 at 19:12
having trouble with the whole ipsw thing …wtf…driving me crazy over here
Posted on August 20th, 2009 at 20:17
You find the correct .ipsw file download site under step one. You must download that file (using FireFox, not Internet Explorer), and then move it to the folder you unzipped redsn0w to. Got it yet?
Posted on August 23rd, 2009 at 14:28
