Windows 7 Ultimate Cracked and Activated with Master Key

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 30 - 2009

Windows 7 UltimateA report by neowin indicates that Windows 7 Ultimate has already been cracked and activated even before its public release.

A leaked .ISO [from Lenovo] was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista. Another point to note is that the key is a master one, which can be used to activate other OEM branded installations, like ones from Dell, HP or indeed Lenovo.

It’s pretty hilarious that this would happen right after people discover they can only upgrade their Vista to Win 7 freely if they happened to buy Vista within the last wek. Joke’s on you, Bill..  as usual.

Stunning Nano-Phone Surfaces in Patent

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 29 - 2009

A recent patent filing unearthed by MacNN reveals Apple plans for a double sided iPhone nano.

The full face-side of this device will be nothing more than a display, much like the iPhone is today, while the back-side will be primarily dominated by a force-sensitive touch based surface. Your fingers, which act as a cursor, control the face-side UI by the back-side etched controls.

The dramatic design will offer users a variety of interfaces or modes to work with including one for a phone, text messaging, a traditional iPod, a camera mode and more. The design may also, according to17740 Apple, simply offer consumers with a dual-sided display option in lieu of a force sensitive controller surface.

According to the report, it is unclear how the etched controller idea would work. Would they be interchangeable or preset or could the back surface change itself.

Apple credits John G. Elias part owner of the former FingerWorks as the sole inventor of this patent application. Elias is now working at Apple on other touch related patents.

Apple Claims Jailbreaking Aids Drug Dealers & CyberAttacks

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 28 - 2009

17724It looks like Apple has resorted to making absurd claims in its effort to prevent jailbreaking from becoming a legally acceptable practice. We already know how (most of) you feel about this, but any debates are welcome because this could become an issue for many, many people.

Security researcher Christopher Soghoian reports that in a recent filing with the copyright office, “Apple has argued that consumers who wish to jailbreak their mobile phones and change the device’s unique serial number must be drug dealers or other criminals.”

[E]ach iPhone contains a unique Exclusive Chip Identification (ECID) number that identifies the phone to the cell tower. With access to the BBP via jailbreaking, hackers may be able to change the ECID, which in turn can enable phone calls to be made anonymously (this would be desirable to drug dealers, for example) or charges for the calls to be avoided.

Wired.com has discovered additional and equally ridiculous accusations in which Apple suggests jailbroken iPhones would be used to cause catastrophic damage to cellular networks:

“a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,”

“Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer — to potentially catastrophic result.”

“The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreaking exemption would open the door to them.”

Fred von Lohmann, is an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group founded to protect the rights of individuals. He notes that there are over a million jailbroken iPhones and this has never happened.

But wait, wouldn’t Apple’s argument would make open source platforms such as Android a menace to society as well? Saying that a jailbroken iPhone should be illegal because its possible to do something illegal with it sounds like a very weak defense.

-Play through the game to unlock “Mercenary Mode,” a separate mission mode with pre-set goals, weapons and conditions.
Big question: is this worth it? If you love the franchise, yes. If you’re a hardcore purist, unfortunately no. Bringing a celebrated hardcore game like Resident Evil 4 to the iPhone is an act of bravery. The built-in audience is bound to be hyper-critical of any shortcuts, less-than-ideal controls, or watered-down mechanics. The fact that the iPhone Resident Evil 4 manages to replicate the atmosphere and locations of the GameCube (as well as Wii and PS2) neo-classic is pretty astounding and a testament to Capcom’s prowess with the hardware. Sure, it’s based on a Japanese mobile game, but it is impossible not to be impressed with the wide open areas, smooth animations, and great texture work. It really does look like Resident Evil 4. The controls leave a bit to be desired, and for some that is a complete dealbreaker.

Personally, there are other franchises that I’d like to see Capcom bring to the iPhone, but this is a solid start.

Foxconn Compensates Family for Worker’s Death

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 27 - 2009

iphoneskWell it looks like this story is about to wrap up for good. Foxconn has compensated the family of Sun Danyong, an iPhone worker who committed suicide after losing a prototype of the next generation iPhone, according to a NYTimes report.

The company declined to say how much was paid to Mr. Sun’s family; however, Mr. Sun’s brother cited a figure of 300,000 renminbi, or more than $44,000, and said that Mr. Sun’s girlfriend was also given an Apple notebook. I’m not sure if the notebook was necessary (as it was the loss of an Apple product that caused so much grief in the first place) but I will applaud Foxconn for their efforts.

Sun, a recent engineering graduate was working for Foxconn in Shenzhen. He was responsible for shipping iPhone prototypes from Foxconn to Apple. According to Chinese news reports he received 16 prototype phones from the assembly line at a Foxconn factory. After reporting that one prototype had gone missing he was questioned and possibly physically intimidated by Foxconn security. Unable to cope with the pressure, he jumped to his death from a twelfth story apartment.

Tron Legacy Teaser Trailer – We like.

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 27 - 2009

After watching this footage (which screened at Comic-Con last week), we’re a little less worried about the state of the sequel to 1982’s sci-fi classic Tron. For one, it’s been retitled Tron Legacy—which seems slightly less lame than the original title TR2N—and it’s also clear from the teaser that watching this flick in IMAX 3D is gonna be our childhood video game fantasy come true. Watch the trailer for the original film after the jump…

Anakin Skywalker 10 Years Later: WTF Happened?

Posted by Clyde Arrowny On July - 27 - 2009

Anakin_Skywalker_3The spunky little kid you remember from Star Wars Episode 1 isn’t a kid anymore. In fact, he hasn’t been anything remotely close to a kid for the past 10 years. Jake Lloyd, the child-star that played the pivotal role of a young Anakin Skywalker,  finally reveals the not-so-great aspects of being a pod-racing superstar while growing up as a 10 year old.

The truth is, the Force was not strong with this one, as the interview below clearly details. He grew up hating the Star Wars franchise/series, because he was single-handedly blamed for ruining the series by all hardcore Star Wars groupies alike. My opinion? It was old man Lucas’ fault, not the kids’. He had a good thing going with the original trilogy but decided to go a different route, but what he didn’t realize was that it took him 15 years (and a whole lot of recently grown-up fans from the original) to finally do so.  Star Wars Episode One ended up being a joke, like something out of a child’s book. And people just won’t let it go. Jake still gets shit even at the not-so-tender age of 20.

Here’s my two cents: I was 13 when I first saw the movie… and I absolutely loved it. Fake light-saber fights after the movie and everything.

Apple’s Much-Anticipated Tablet to Come Early Next Year?

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 24 - 2009

tablet-090724-1AppleInsider has learned from strikingly accurate sources that the Apple Tablet will make its debut early next year.

The long rumored Apple Tablet is said to be a 10 inch, 3G-enabled device, similar to a large iPod touch. As the brainchild of CEO Steve Jobs, the new device has been under intense scrutiny. Every tiny detail must be to his liking or its back to the drawing board.

As such, AppleInsider has observed silently as the project was reset at least a half-dozen times over the past 24 months. Each time, development was frozen and key aspects of the device rethought, retooled and repositioned. At times, those close to the Apple co-founder had their doubts that it would ever see the light of day, just like a smaller PDA device he canned a few years after returning to the company.

However, the past six months have reportedly seen the critical pieces fall into place. Jobs, who’s been overseeing the project from his home, office and hospital beds, has finally achieved that much-sought aura of satisfaction. He’s since cemented the device in the company’s 2010 roadmap, where it’s being positioned for a first quarter launch, according to people well-respected by AppleInsider for their striking accuracy in Apple’s internal affairs.

A recent report from Scott Moritz at the TheStreet.com suggests that an initial version of the tablet will be subsidized by Verizon; however, he has been told that the Apple and Verizon partnership “won’t be as tightly integrated” as the Apple and AT&T one.
