Duke Nukem 3D for iPhone, iPod touch

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 11 - 2009

Duke Nukem iPhoneDuke Nukem 3D has been released for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Los Angeles. Under attack by aliens intent on stealing our chicks for breeding Duke Nukem springs into action dealing damage like only he can, making his “insightful” comments along the way. If you’ve never played a Duke game, this is your chance to see why he’s been a fan favorite since 1991, with over 18 original Duke Nukem games since that time. Duke Nukem is not the typical faceless hero — he’s an in your face hero who has a personality that doesn’t quit. Yes, it’a B-movie plot but that’s what makes it fun!

A New Way to Kill
This high-powered iPhone 3D engine supports TapShoot, a unique way to play first-person shooters on the iPhone and iTouch, taking full advantage of the unique touch screen interface to easily and quickly aim and shoot enemies, without the frustration of trying to line up your weapon perfectly. Once you’ve experienced TapShoot, you’ll wish all FPS games on the iPhone had this breakthrough feature.

Customized Controls
Yes, we have the thumb-stick style controller, but we’ve also pioneered another way to guide Duke through levels, using slider style controls. Practically everyone who’s playtested the game thinks this new method is superior. And this along with the TapShoot feature makes Duke Nukem 3D a blast to play on the iPhone… now where is Duke Nukem Forever?

Duke Nukem 3D is available now in the App Store for $2.99.

Big question: is this worth it? If you love the franchise, yes. If you’re a hardcore purist, unfortunately no. Bringing a celebrated hardcore game like Resident Evil 4 to the iPhone is an act of bravery. The built-in audience is bound to be hyper-critical of any shortcuts, less-than-ideal controls, or watered-down mechanics. The fact that the iPhone Resident Evil 4 manages to replicate the atmosphere and locations of the GameCube (as well as Wii and PS2) neo-classic is pretty astounding and a testament to Capcom’s prowess with the hardware. Sure, it’s based on a Japanese mobile game, but it is impossible not to be impressed with the wide open areas, smooth animations, and great texture work. It really does look like Resident Evil 4. The controls leave a bit to be desired, and for some that is a complete dealbreaker.

Personally, there are other franchises that I’d like to see Capcom bring to the iPhone, but this is a solid start.

An Unfortunate Truth: iPhone App Store Pricing and Rank Lists

Posted by Locke Cole On July - 21 - 2009

Earlier today, Apple revealed its second quarter earnings. And while the company beat expectations (once again) and had a record quarter (once again), that’s not what caught our attention during their conference call. It was actually this answer, given by Apple COO Timothy Cook, to a question posed to him about the App Store: apple-logo-spaced

Q: Charles Wolf (Needham & Company): Okay, well, let me ask a question about the App Store then — in terms of application prices, there appears to be a race to the bottom. I’ve noticed that there’s an increasing number of $0.99 offerings. Do you regard this as a concern and if so, are you taking any steps to enable consumers to separate quality apps from the garbage?

Timothy D. Cook (Apple): Charlie, we are always looking for ways to categorize apps differently and we do have some ideas in this area. As you know, today we do it by type of App and also have show popular apps and top-selling apps, et cetera.

We realize there’s opportunity there for further improvement and are working on that. Read the rest of this entry »
