Jumsoft releases Money for iPhone

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 24 - 2009

Jumsoft has released a free version of its most popular product, Money, adapted for the new iPhone OS 3.0 and approved by Apple. Jumsoft Money for iPhone features an easy-to-use interface, smart accounts, powerful reports, management of bills, budgets, and payees, and the ability to sync with the desktop version of Money 3.4. In short, this app kicks ass and is exactly what I’ve been wanting on my phone for quite some time. Why? Because the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit down on my computer and go through receipts or other junk to compile this stuff on Money or Excel. Want a bit more background? Some peace of mind? Okay.. Read the rest of this entry »

AT&T Responds to FCC

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 21 - 2009

A copy of AT&T’s response to the FCC Inquiry over its role in the rejection of Google Voice has been posted online by Engadget. This comes shortly after Apple posted their official response to the FCC online.

The FCC recently opened an inquiry into why Apple refused Google Voice from the App Store and what role AT&T played.

Interestingly AT&T claims they “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” which may very well be true; given how psycho Apple has been with these things lately. Everyone’s been wondering “why” and I’m actually glad to see the FCC calling them out on this nonsense.

GPush – Gmail Notifier for iPhone

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 18 - 2009

GPush_270x344For months, Gmail users have not been able to get their email pushed to the iPhone. Thanks to release of GPush, that is all about to change.. well, sorta.

The GPush application is very simple for the user; all the user has to do is enter their Gmail username and password. Once that is complete, they never really need to look at the 99 cent application again (unless wanting to log in as a different Gmail user). It works by using the IMAP IDLE function which Gmail supports. Ordinarily the iPhone’s OS 3 firmware doesn’t make use this; but by utilizing this function,  the iPhone can use Gmail just like the Palm Pre and Android based phones can.

GPush will alert you to incoming Gmail messages with a red icon badge, a chime, and a semi-transparent alert window that reads the sender’s name and the subject line. (You can change these in the Notification settings.) The application interface itself does little, apart from collecting your log-in information once, and manually reregistering your credentials. All the rest works behind the scenes.

So how does this app perform? Fair, in our tests, but not worthy of the hype we’ve seen elsewhere. Several alerts for incoming e-mails came through, either after sliding the phone to wake it from sleep, or while actively using the iPhone. However, many other messages lagged or weren’t passed down from the server at all, though they still showed up in the Mail box.

GPush’s developers claim that (during a phone call) there could be issues if the phone frequently switches between Wi-Fi and 3G data and loses the data connection. During these moments of instability, GPush will queue the new messages for notifications. When the iPhone regains its service, GPush sends out only the most recent notification, an Apple limitation to keep alerts from flooding your screen.

I was really pushing (no pun intended) for this app to be ‘the one’, and yes..  technically it is. With a price tag of 99 cents, it’s hard to trash the efforts put forth by this app. At the same time, we’re left with an old saying that rings true once more – you get what you pay for.

Duke Nukem 3D for iPhone, iPod touch

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 11 - 2009

Duke Nukem iPhoneDuke Nukem 3D has been released for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Los Angeles. Under attack by aliens intent on stealing our chicks for breeding Duke Nukem springs into action dealing damage like only he can, making his “insightful” comments along the way. If you’ve never played a Duke game, this is your chance to see why he’s been a fan favorite since 1991, with over 18 original Duke Nukem games since that time. Duke Nukem is not the typical faceless hero — he’s an in your face hero who has a personality that doesn’t quit. Yes, it’a B-movie plot but that’s what makes it fun!

A New Way to Kill
This high-powered iPhone 3D engine supports TapShoot, a unique way to play first-person shooters on the iPhone and iTouch, taking full advantage of the unique touch screen interface to easily and quickly aim and shoot enemies, without the frustration of trying to line up your weapon perfectly. Once you’ve experienced TapShoot, you’ll wish all FPS games on the iPhone had this breakthrough feature.

Customized Controls
Yes, we have the thumb-stick style controller, but we’ve also pioneered another way to guide Duke through levels, using slider style controls. Practically everyone who’s playtested the game thinks this new method is superior. And this along with the TapShoot feature makes Duke Nukem 3D a blast to play on the iPhone… now where is Duke Nukem Forever?

Duke Nukem 3D is available now in the App Store for $2.99.

USAA Bank to Allow Check Deposit by iPhone

Posted by Locke Cole On August - 10 - 2009

USAA Online Check SystemUSAA, a private bank, will update its iPhone app this week to enable check deposits using the iPhone, according to a New York Times report.

Users will take a photograph of both sides of the check using the iPhone’s camera which will be used to obtain the necessary information for deposit.

“We’re essentially taking an image of the check, and once you hit the send button, that image is going into our deposit-taking system as any other check would,” said Wayne Peacock, a USAA executive vice president.

The check will not need to be mailed in at a later date; however, it should be voided then filed or discarded. To reduce fraud, only customers who are eligible for credit and have insurance through USAA will be permitted to use the new deposit feature. About 60 percent of the bank’s 7.2 million customers qualify.

-Play through the game to unlock “Mercenary Mode,” a separate mission mode with pre-set goals, weapons and conditions.
Big question: is this worth it? If you love the franchise, yes. If you’re a hardcore purist, unfortunately no. Bringing a celebrated hardcore game like Resident Evil 4 to the iPhone is an act of bravery. The built-in audience is bound to be hyper-critical of any shortcuts, less-than-ideal controls, or watered-down mechanics. The fact that the iPhone Resident Evil 4 manages to replicate the atmosphere and locations of the GameCube (as well as Wii and PS2) neo-classic is pretty astounding and a testament to Capcom’s prowess with the hardware. Sure, it’s based on a Japanese mobile game, but it is impossible not to be impressed with the wide open areas, smooth animations, and great texture work. It really does look like Resident Evil 4. The controls leave a bit to be desired, and for some that is a complete dealbreaker.

Personally, there are other franchises that I’d like to see Capcom bring to the iPhone, but this is a solid start.

With a fan base of nearly 25% of all iPhone users, it’s safe to say that Facebook’s iPhone application is one of the most popular apps on the market.  Earlier today, Joe Hewitt (lead engineer for the app) shared some more details on what’s in store for the upcoming version 3.0

facebook3iphone

Pictured above are a couple of screenshots from the new version; Nice, right? Besides the new home screen, you’ll also be able to create your own photo albums, RSVP to events, and much more. The one thing lacking?  Push notifications. This is the iPhone OS 3.0, this is the 3.0 Facebook application..  where’s push? When a new feature is advertised and shoved in your face every which way possible, you start to expect said feature to you know – actually get used. While we’d love to have seen push being used in this version, here’s a full list of what the upcoming Facebook 3.0 will bring to the iPhone:

1. The “new” News Feed
2. Like (we like this)
3. Events (including the ability to RSVP)
4. Pages
5. Notes
6. Create new photo albums
7. Upload photos to any album
8. Zoom into photos
9. Easier photo tagging
10. Profile Pictures albums
11. A new home screen for easy access to all your stuff, search, and notifications
12. Add your favorite profiles and pages to the home screen
13. Improved Notifications (they link to the comments so you can reply)
14. Quickly call or text people directly from the Friends page
15. Messages you are typing will be restored if you quit or get interrupted by a phone call

I can’t tell you when to expect it, but Facebook has responded with a reassuring “soon”. You can also expect to see push notifications in the revised Facebook 3.1 slated for a late summer relase.
